Intermediate Wheel Throwing

Intermediate Wheel Throwing

This 6-week class is designed for intermediate students to progress their wheel-thrown technical skills and overall refinement of their work. The following techniques will be highlighted: pulling (making the most out of your clay), collaring, advanced shaping, and trimming techniques. Each student will be able to work on their own personal hurdles and be guided through them in this individualized learning environment.

Class inclusions will vary based on the skill level and interests of the students and may include throwing off the hump, altering thrown forms, lidded pots, multi-part vessels, sets (matching/nesting), surface texture techniques, and glaze application.

Students should be able to:
Wedge clay
Center 2 pounds of clay on the wheel
Throw and trim basic forms (bowl, cylinder)

Students are encouraged to bring ideas for projects. Student work will be available for pick up 1-3 weeks after the end of the class.

*No class held on July 3.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

CAROLE ROBARDS
With a background in design, I have been working in clay for almost 10 years and have been a full-time ceramic artist since 2021. Having gotten so much joy and healing from my time in clay and the community surrounding it, I want to share that experience by creating opportunities for others to enjoy, learn, and laugh within a supportive ceramics community. As everyone’s journey and goals with clay are different, I work to meet each person where they are and provide a solid foundation of essential skills and knowledge as they find their own creative path.

As a visual and tactile person, my work incorporates playful pattern work, stamping, carving, and layered texture. I tremendously enjoy the many stages of working with clay and the infinite possibilities of what can be created. The process of taking a raw, soft, malleable lump of earth and turning it into a functional sculpture durable enough to withstand centuries of use continues to fascinate me every single day. Through a variety of materials and techniques, I seek to create pieces which are beautiful to look at and interesting to touch while also being enjoyable and comfortable to use. In addition to my own art and teaching classes, I organize and host workshops with visiting ceramic artists from around the country here in Tallahassee.
