LeMoyne Arts has embarked on a journey to expand and improve its art education programming through the acquisition and renovation of the building located at 131 North Gadsden Street – immediately adjacent (on the southside) to the LeMoyne Galleries.
The new building, purchased by LeMoyne on July 13, 2021, is two stories, 6,254 square feet with 20 parking spaces, and a garden area. This new art education center will house modern, accessible classrooms and studios and is pivotal to LeMoyne's investment in and education of this region's youth as well as adults; thereby ensuring Art for Always for one and all. Art studio classrooms will include drawing, watercolor/acrylic/oil painting, fiber arts, mixed media, digital media, glass arts and flexible open studio and workshop space. Each studio will be named in honor of someone who has played a meaningful role in the history of LeMoyne Art Foundation. Ron joined LeMoyne as an affiliate artist in 1977 and served as volunteer Executive Director from 1983-1986. He recently recalled his active days at LeMoyne with much affection stating, “I loved those years at LeMoyne. We had a lot of fun keeping everything going.” In appreciation of Ron’s role at LeMoyne and in the arts community, LeMoyne has previously honored Ron and his legacy by naming an art festival lane in his honor. Plans include a signature Yrabedra “border” at the top of one of the studio walls created by friends of Ron’s, and which channel his spirit and bring his memory into the studio space. Ron was very pleased to learn of this new honor and had hoped to be able to see the project completed. An artist and leader, Ron played a major role in the evolution and development of LeMoyne as a local treasure and will now be remembered through this meaningful creative space. LeMoyne is proud to create this teaching space and to make it the best it can be through the donations of generous donors seeking to remember and preserve Ron’s legacy in a meaningful and impactful way. LeMoyne is seeking $100,000 to support this effort and will recognize all who share in this tribute to Ron and his legacy. |

Charlotte Williams (July 1, 1929 – January 13, 2020)
Charlotte Williams (July 1, 1929 – January 13, 2020)

Charlotte graduated in 1947 from Leon High School where she established her foundation of academic excellence, female leadership, appreciation for the visual arts, love of literature, and learning for personal satisfaction. She attended Florida State University beginning in 1947. Her career included FSU assistant to the Dean in the College of Home Economics and the College of Business. Over a nearly 20-year period, Charlotte took advantage of a program offered by FSU allowing certain staff to take one course per term free of charge. Charlotte graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1967. She received a Master of Science in Higher Education in 1972 and in 1979, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Speech Communications.
Throughout her life, Charlotte was involved with both the visual and literary arts. She became involved with LeMoyne Arts soon after its inception in 1963 along with her mother. She participated as a member, volunteer, and served on the Board of Directors more than once. She most enjoyed the classes provided by the organization. Upon retirement in 1981, Charlotte began pursuing her artistic and literary interests more actively. Her chief interest was quilting. Working in conjunction with the Museum of Florida History, she was on the Steering Committee of the Florida Quilt Heritage Project, a five-year program to discover, document, and preserve the history of Florida as expressed through Florida quilts and the lives of the quilters. The project registered more than 5,000 quilts from around the state. Subsequently, Charlotte authored a book published by the University Press of Florida titled, “Florida Quilts.” She also presented a solo exhibition at COCA’s ArtPort gallery, published in numerous literary reviews, won awards for her quilts, as well as her watercolors.
In October 2021 the first “Women Among Us: Portraits in Strength” exhibit at LeMoyne Arts was dedicated to Charlotte Williams in celebration of her lifetime achievements.

For decades, Linda Van Beck has been an active member and supporter of LeMoyne Art Foundation. Linda is one of our earliest members and artists and for years has taken on the growth and husbandry of LeMoyne’s permanent collections.
Linda has worked closely with Karl Zerbe’s daughter, Maria to secure major pieces that contribute to the Civil Right Collection and adding other significant Zerbe pieces to the collection including several new additions in 2021 which were shown in our Zerbe Zelebration.
Linda has also acquired several beautiful pieces of Nancy Reid Gunn, adding to the story of Nancy’s contributions to LeMoyne and art in our region. Most of these pieces were purchased by Linda Van Beck and donated to LeMoyne. She has been very generous with her time and her artwork, donating a major piece of her artwork to each Art & Soul Celebration live auction since it began. These pieces have sold for at least $1,000 each. The one pictured in the article below was donated and sold in 2021.
