The Betty Ann Munroe Skelton Front Porch Dedication

​LeMoyne Arts and the family of Betty Ann Munroe Skelton (1933-2023) are pleased to announce the November 1 dedication of the The Betty Ann Munroe Skelton Front Porch at LeMoyne Arts Meginnis-Munroe House "where art meets community."  LeMoyne Executive Director Arielle Raff says, "The Front Porch is the foremost gathering spot for gallery openings and other special events -- the first space guests enjoy upon arrival at LeMoyne." 
 
The Meginnis-Munroe House,  built by George Meginnis in 1854 and home to LeMoyne Arts since 1972, was the residence of Meginnis' descendant Ivan Munroe, Sr., his wife  Mildred, and their children -- Betty Ann, Theresa, Jett and Ivan, Jr.   Now on the National Register of Historic Places, Betty Ann once described her ancestral home as the "happy house" where she and her siblings had great adventures exploring the shadowy corners of the cavernous basement, sliding down banisters and eventually hosting cheerleading practices for both the Leon High School and Florida State University squads.  According to her widower Benson L. Skelton, Jr.. "The naming of the Front Porch for Betty Ann is the perfect tribute to her happy and generous spirit. "  LeMoyne President Dan Taylor adds, "LeMoyne is honored to create this perpetual and permanent tribute to Betty Ann in the house where she grew up.  We are profoundly grateful to the Munroe-Skelton family." 
 
Betty Ann was a remarkable person in every respect.  Her priorities were her family, her faith and her community.  She was a founding member and two-time president of the Committee of 99, a law enforcement support group,  and a founding member of the Tree House for abused and neglected children.  Betty Ann also helped start the Leon County School Resource Officer Program,  and  was a founding member of the Big Bend Hospice Foundation.  Her community work was featured in a March 2000 Tallahassee Democrat article "A Woman of Accomplishment."  
 
Betty Ann also served on the first Board of Governors  for Leadership Tallahassee and was Vice President of the Florida Heritage Foundation,  and a member of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century.  She authored "A Collection of Thoughts and Prayers," a book that is still loved and sought three decades after its publication.
