This exhibition, consisting of evocative art works completed by inmates of Madison, correctional institution, will capture the value and importance of using art to explore identity within and how to facilitate connections without. Ultimately this show will provide a bridge between those inside and the outside community. The collection emerged from a two week arts program, facilitated by a well-known FSU professor and art therapist whose focus has been Art therapy with those in correctional systems and an established exhibiting artist, author and art therapist, working in collaboration with the artists inside.
Within prison—an environment perceived as stifling, desolate, and rigid--there are surprisingly inventive displays of creativity that occur within its walls. Counter-intuitively, innovative artistic expression is inherent –even championed--within this subculture. The ability to create artistic products is often championed inside, while the process of art making is recognized as therapeutically beneficial, providing opportunities for open expression of vulnerability and challenges, and a way to redirect frustration, anxiety and fear. Additionally, by creating a bridge between the inside and the outside cultures, art has the power to help create new labels—in essence, re-humanizing the dehumanized.
This exhibition, Connections: Within and Without will consist of evocative and highly creative art pieces completed by inmates of Madison Correctional Institution, capturing the value of using art to explore identity within, and how to facilitate connections without. The collection emerged from a two week arts program, facilitated by Paula Gasparini-Santos, an established exhibiting artist, author and therapist, and Dr. Dave Gussak, a Florida State University professor and art therapist whose focus has been art therapy with those in correctional systems. In collaboration with the Madison Arts Program (MAP) artists inside, it’s very supportive correctional staff, Connection First, LeMoyne Arts, and supportive members of the community, the team has curated this intimate and revealing exhibition.

From Grief to Grace
Paula Gasparini-Santos Thursday, May 23 - Saturday, Jun 29, 2024 Kindly presented by Katee Tully & Janet Hinkle
From Grief to Grace features paintings depicting the psychological and relational experience of grief. The artist defines grief as the meeting of the unknown, not exclusive to loss through death, but rather the thing that occurs within us when life changes and we meet fear at the edge of the unknown. When chapters close, when relationships end, when we meet death and loss, when we are faced with choices and sacrifices--all of it requires us to have intimacy with grief. Through visual exploration and poetry, this exhibition invites the audience into a dialogue, self reflection, and expression of their own grief. The artist believes that one's ability to become intimate with grief is equal to one's ability to be deeply alive in the world. She wants through these works to challenge the notion that grief is reserved for death and dying, but instead that grief is essential for creation and beginnings. What the caterpillar sees as the end, the artist sees as the butterfly. |
