Clay Surfaces: Decorating with Slip

Ready to add unique touches to make your pots distinctly yours? Join us for this hands-on workshop exploring a variety of surface design techniques for clay!

In this workshop, Carole will guide you through different methods for adding pattern and texture to your pottery with slip! We will learn three slip decoration techniques: slip trailing, painting with slip, and using stencils with slip.

Practice tiles will be provided for you to experiment on during the workshop. Students are welcome to bring their own leather hard greenware for further experimentation.

Class discussions will include how to make and store slip, stencil materials, and slip decoration tools.

Workshop includes:

- Practice tiles

- Slip trailing kit (slip trailing bottle, tips, syringe, tip cleaning tool)

- Use of studio tools, brushes, and stencils

- Bisque firing of practice tiles (available for pick up 1-3 weeks after workshop)

Enjoy a fun day in the shared studio environment while exploring new surface design techniques!

Experience Level: All levels - no prior clay experience required. Prior introductory experience with clay is helpful.

Meet the Instructor

Carole Robards

With a background in design, I have been working in clay for almost 10 years and have been a full-time ceramic artist since 2021. Having gotten so much joy and healing from my time in clay and the community surrounding it, I want to share that experience by creating opportunities for others to enjoy, learn, and laugh within a supportive ceramics community. As everyone’s journey and goals with clay are different, I work to meet each person where they are and provide a solid foundation of essential skills and knowledge as they find their own creative path. As a visual and tactile person, my work incorporates playful pattern work, stamping, carving, and layered texture. I tremendously enjoy the many stages of working with clay and the infinite possibilities of what can be created. The process of taking a raw, soft, malleable lump of earth and turning it into a functional sculpture durable enough to withstand centuries of use continues to fascinate me every single day. Through a variety of materials and techniques, I seek to create pieces which are beautiful to look at and interesting to touch while also being enjoyable and comfortable to use. In addition to my own art and teaching classes, I organize and host workshops with visiting ceramic artists from around the country here in Tallahassee.
