LeMoyne Arts celebrates the 36th year of the Mahaska Whitley Student Exhibition: High School Art and Senior Portfolio Competition. This Tallahassee tradition gives high school students from across Leon County the opportunity to display their artwork in a gallery setting and gain recognition for their hard work and talent. Awards, including college scholarships, are determined by a panel of judges from the local collegiate art programs. Ms. Whitley, a retired art teacher and co-founder of the exhibit, selects a piece to receive the Founder’s Award. The goal of the Mahaska Whitley Student Exhibition is to encourage young people to pursue a creative career and to continue their love of art!

Get excited for the annual Quilters Unlimited exhibit! After a three-year hiatus, the Quilters Unlimited members are back to share their work at LeMoyne Arts. Some transformations are big and bold. Quilters and other fiber artists manifest metamorphosis in both subtle and bold ways. From 2019 until now, Quilters Unlimited members haven’t been able to share their new work, metamorphoses, and artistic transformations with our community. Abstracto: Land of Dreams, featuring painter Leslie Anderson, is an exhibit full of rich color, texture, and dreamy imagery. Abstract landscapes and figures lead the viewer on an imaginative journey. This exhibit allows the viewer to have a moment of freedom to assign their own meaning to the work, whilst being moved by unique compositions and expressive splashes of color.
Born and raised in Guatemala City, Central America, Leslie Anderson’s first job was as an elementary school teacher. Moving to Florida in the mid ‘80s to continue her education, she received a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and a Master’s in Art Education and Art Therapy at Florida State University. Combining her passion for teaching and art, Anderson worked for the public school system as an art teacher for over 29 years; she retired in September 2020.
Her experience in interior design, art education and the day-to-day work in being a full-time art teacher have allowed her to work on various mediums, however, her passion has always been painting. These past years, as her two children left home, she found the needed time and space to pursue her art. She loves working with color. Leslie reflects “Color can provoke enormous reactions in people; this only intensifies with the addition of playful and in many cases seductive lines in her work.”
