Japanese Garden
Transcript
Welcome to the Japanese Garden - dedicated by Ray and Kathy Bye, a unique space featuring Japanese-inspired landscape design. Japanese Gardens incorporate features that promote serenity, such as stones, water, bridges, lanterns, and specially selected plants.
The centerpiece of the garden is a sculpture made and donated to LeMoyne by Mikiko Tanaka called “Let’s Listen.” Born in Shiga, Japan, Mikiko Tanaka learned a variety of clay techniques, from throwing on the wheel to slab and coil building by hand. In 1986, Mikiko came to the United States and eventually moved to Tallahassee and resided here for almost twenty years, immersing herself in the artist community. She gave art lessons in Tallahassee and hosted an annual tea ceremony at LeMoyne Arts for many years before moving to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she passed away at the age of 81. The surrounding rain garden and Unity footbridge are designed to offer a meditative and self-reflective experience. Follow the path ahead for more discoveries in the gardens.
