Memorial Fountain
Transcript
The Memorial Fountain has been part of the LeMoyne Arts Garden for over 50 years. This beautiful tribute was dedicated by the Friends and Family of Joseph P. Jefferson in 1969. It was created in partnership with renowned artists William Watson and Frank Colson.
William Watson, who designed the fountain, studied under artists A.E. Baggs, Edgar Littlefield, and Carlton Atherton. Watson served as an Associate Professor of Ceramics in the Art Education Department at Florida State University. The Memorial Fountain was adapted and cast by Frank Colson. Colson worked as a Producer and Director of Educational Television at Florida State University from 1959-1962. Colson later left Florida State University to open his own school of pottery in Sarasota, Florida called the Colson School of Art. Colson is renowned for his sculptures crafted from clay, bronze, and mixed media. Together, Watson and Colson created a beautiful tribute that still resonates with LeMoyne visitors today. LeMoyne is equally grateful to local sculptor Mark Dickson, who lovingly restored the fountain in 2021.
We hope you’ve enjoyed your tour of the gardens here at LeMoyne and welcome you to explore the pieces and their tranquil setting at your leisure. Be sure to come back inside to explore all our visual art offerings in the gallery.
