Advanced Pottery TechniquesThis class will begin with a presentation of several advanced construction and decorating techniques, followed by instructions in Southeastern Native American pottery making. Subsequent classes will be geared to the students interests and could include relief sculpture, image transfer, fired on decals, engraving, deep carving and unusual throwing techniques.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORMARTY HAYTHORN
I began making pottery when I was very young after visiting Native American Reservations in the Southwest and watching Maria Martinez and other potters at work. I continued to make pottery over the years as a hobby, then as part-time occupation. In the mid-1970’s I apprenticed with ethnographic artist Ivan Gundrum for 4 years reproducing Southeastern pottery artifacts. For 6 years I worked as a Supervisory Arts Specialist for the American Military Community in Mannheim Germany, eventually supervising 8 recreational arts facilities. During this time, I received a degree from Friends Worl College in Arts Administration with minors in Ceramics and Applied Psychology. Upon returning to the States, I worked as a Recreation Therapist and established Ancient Hands to continue with Mr. Gundrum’s work and expand upon it with contemporary pottery in the Southeastern Native American tradition. I’ve continued with this work full time for over 30 years. About 8 years ago I began designing and creating mosaic public art projects, one of which was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. These were conducted as community art projects and in total involved about 130 volunteers. |
