Batik WorkshopLearn the ancient art of surface design on fabric with wax dye. In this workshop we will learn about the process of applying hot, melted wax to natural fabrics. The wax blocks areas of the fabric from the dye and produces a variety of designs and colors.
Day one: All supplies will be included, feel free to bring your own natural fabric, can be white or a color, washed and ready to dye. We will cover the background of batik, and an overview of the dyeing process, with a brief lecture on color theory when dyeing fabric and information about the tools and supplies we will be using. Then we will start right away to apply wax to fabric. Students will be able to finish a piece or two on the first day! Day two: Brief time to share work from the previous day and discuss how the projects turned out, what we like, and what we would prefer to be different. Then we will finish any projects from day one, before starting new, more complex projects. With the information learned in class, students should be able to Batik at home. Instructor will provide printed information as well as samples. Please wear old clothes! The dyes we use are permanent. |

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORMarcie Preisler
I grew up in the Republic of Panama, where I developed a love of bright colors and the beauty of the natural world. My high school Art Teacher taught me how to Batik on fabric and I have had an electric frying pan full of wax since 1968. My interest in Art led me to an MA in Studio Art from the University of New Mexico. I spent many years in New Mexico, where bright colors contrast with the arid landscape. We moved to Florida in 2000, where I learned about Fused Glass. I love the colors and the endless possibilities with glass, either alone or integrated with other mediums. I enjoy teaching Art, and have always believed in sharing absolutely everything I know, design, technique, supply sources and tricks of the trade. It is wonderful to see the looks on peoples faces when they see their finished products and love what they have created. |
