The Meginnis-Munroe House
Transcript
LeMoyne Arts has called the Meginnis-Munroe House its home since 1968, five years after its founding in 1963. However, the house itself was built in 1854. Built by George H. Meginnis for his wife, Louisa Gatlin, this home provided a comfortable living space for the Meginnis family and their descendants in the Munroe family. Like many local structures, the Meginnis-Munroe House was commandeered for use by Confederate troops during the Civil War. The house even served as a temporary hospital after the Battle of Olustee in 1864. The Meginnis-Munroe house is located within Tallahassee’s Historic Park Avenue District and continues to serve as Tallahassee’s home for the visual arts. To continue on your tour, venture through the Bye Plaza located to the right of the Meginnis-Munroe House, to learn more about LeMoyne’s Chain of Parks Festival and the newest campus expansion, the Art Education Center.
